The building of the Scientific-Technical Library is a prominent example of Soviet modernist architecture. It is located along Merab Kostava Street, between Vere Park and Hero Square. Despite its utilitarian purpose, the building’s design incorporates distinctive elements that blur the line between function and decoration. The most striking feature of the façade is the series of vertical concrete structures resembling sunshades, designed to protect the interior spaces from the sunlight, which is particularly relevant for Tbilisi as a city where bright sunlight is a constant factor in ensuring a comfortable environment inside the library halls. However, despite their practical role, the sunshades become an aesthetic focal point, contributing to the unique visual appeal of the building.

These sunshades are enclosed within a distinctive concrete frame that has circular openings at the sides of the building. While at first glance these circular shapes may seem purely decorative –reminiscent of the portholes of a space or sea vessel – they are more likely to serve a structural purpose, such as load reduction or tension distribution across the large concrete slab.

In contrast to the sun-protected facades, the building also incorporates large panoramic windows-a hallmark of modernist architecture. Located in communal spaces such as stairwells at the ends of the building, these windows bring in abundant natural light and create a sense of openness that contrasts with the enclosed areas of the library’s facade.

Since 2001, the building has served as the second branch of the National Science Library, housing patents, technological standards, and industrial catalogs. Inside, visitors can still find additional decorative elements, including bas-reliefs that reflect the building’s scientific theme. However, parts of the space are now occupied by shops, offices, a nightclub, and a hotel.
